There is a lot of controversy regarding feeding bones to your dogs. For a long time, the common consensus was chicken bones are NOT OK because they splinter easily and hence the sharp edges can cause damage to the dog's consumption passage but pig and cow bones are fine. Then several years back, advocates of BARF (Bones and Raw Foods) came out and said all types of bones should be a part of the dog's diet but the bones MUST be raw only. However, more recently, more and more people including many vets are saying that even raw bones can be risky and potentially fatal. A very good article to read is here on this link: RAW BONES OR COOKED BONES... ARE EITHER SAFE? To play it safe, if your dog loves to swallow his foods without much chewing, it is not recommended to let him have a real bone at all. Both man-made bones and raw bones are good for cleaning the teeth and for relieving stress. They are also good "distractors" since they keep your dog busy for some time. There are also dental bones that can help freshen up your dog's breath. However, remember bones are not the main diet. IMPORTANT: Do ensure the rawhide bones you give your dog are clean and do not have bad smell or mould. They are imported from many different places with varying degrees of quality control and have been handled and re-packed numerous times locally, which may compromise the cleanliness of the products. My suggestion is to buy those that are individually vacuumed-seal packed though they are much more expensive than those sold with no packaging. As for raw bones, do ensure they were properly refrigerated and handled due to threat of bacteria poisoning. Haven't read Misconceptions? Read it now. |
