FREEDOM FROM CHAINS & CAGES

For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.

IMAGINE BEING CHAINED OR CAGED UP IN YOUR BACKYARD.
DAY AFTER DAY. YEAR AFTER YEAR. TILL YOU DIE.

”I watch the door hoping someone will come out to play with me.  No one ever does.  I long to run & stretch my legs but all I can do is pace back & forth over my small patch of ground.  Sometimes I get tangled up in my chain.  I shiver in the chilly nights & pant in the hot sun.  I have become ‘part of the scenery’, ignored by my owner.  Eventually, my eyes grow dark. I stop barking for attention. I have given up hope.
Am I still living? I feel as if my soul has died.…”

YOU COULDN'T INVENT A WORSE PUNISHMENT FOR A DOG THAN KEEPING HIM PERMANENTLY CHAINED OR CAGED.

Dogs are social beings who thrive on interaction with human beings & other animals. A dog chained or penned up in one spot for days or even years suffers immense psychological damage. As the days become years, many of these dogs sit, lay, eat, and defecate within the same 10-foot radius. Chained by the neck, they exist without respect, love, exercise, social interaction, and sometimes even basic nourishment.
They live as prisoners, yet long to be pets.

Humans have lots of ways to entertain ourselves: movies, video games, shopping, television…
Your dog only has YOU.

If you can't give your dog a happy life, should you even have a dog?

DOGS IN CHAINS - THEY ARE THE FORGOTTEN CAUSE.
Their abuse is much more subtle, no less insidious.  They may not be in immediate danger of death but it is more cruel, painful and a slow way to death beginning with the death of the soul.  And they are dying out there, piece by piece, hour by hour.

TAKE THIS STEP WITH US.

Do the best you can for a chained dog today so that he/she can look back one day and see no more chains. That will be the happiest day of his/her existence.

BE OUR EYES & SPEAK UP FOR THE DOGS

There is nothing so sad as the sight of a perpetually chained, neglected animal who swelters in the heat and gets drenched in the rain. Too many times, humane agents have had the terrible experience of being called - too late - to save such dogs. Some die from heat stroke, some starve and others have their windpipes severed by collars or chains long since outgrown. These forgotten dogs are rarely given even the minimal attention and veterinary care. Even when their physical needs are provided for, the lifelong isolation of these social animals constitutes extreme and damaging cruelty.

TAKE A STAND AND SPEAK UP when you see dogs living chained or penned. Speak gently to the caretakers. Share your convictions, information and ways they can improve life for their companion.

The owners may have their reasons for chaining/penning up their dogs. They may say that their
dogs have been disobedient or difficult to control. A disobedient dog is simply one who lacks socialization and guidance. Dogs are very much like children. They learn from proper human guidance, and time socializing and playing with the family and other animals. Given proper interaction and training, any dog is capable of being a wonderful and loyal family companion.

Dogs are loving animals who wants to be part of a pack. WE ARE THEIR PACK. They want nothing more than to be with us. When they live chained/penned up, they do not have this interaction and spend every minute of every day within a tiny, confined space. Living chained by the neck is not an option we would choose for ourselves. Thus we need to make better choices for our best friends.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

l       Advise the owner to bring their pet into their home and give the dog the interaction and love he/she longs for.

l       Advise the owner to fence up their garden so that they can give their dog more freedom to roam about safely.

l       If their dog needs training and re-socialization and they don’t know how, they can give us a call.  We can advise them or help them find the right trainers.

l       Offer to help find a good home for the dog if the owner does not have the time but would like their dog to have a better life.  We can help with publicity and advertisements on various websites to find a good foster or adopter.

If you are not comfortable approaching the caretakers,
you can
print out the information flyer for owners and drop it into the letterbox.  Or provide us with the names and addresses and we will send information in the mail.  You will remain anonymous.  All we need is time, patience and your support. We can make a world of difference to the chained-up/caged-up dogs out there.
